Phenotypic modeling using computation of massive complementary genomic data and its application to the improvement and conservation of forest species in the face of global change

Welcome to my portfolio

Postdoctoral Researcher - Computational Biology and Forest Genetic Improvement
I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Population Genetics and Evolution Lab at the Institute of Forest Sciences (ICIFOR-INIA-CSIC, Spain) as part of the Momentum Program at CSIC (2024-2028). This initiative aims to attract, train, and retain talent in artificial intelligence and advanced digital skills, fostering a new generation of scientists and innovators in Spain.
My research focuses on developing genomic prediction models adapted to forest trees by integrating multi-omics data and artificial intelligence to predict key phenotypes of interest, such as productivity, pest and pathogen resistance, and tolerance to abiotic stresses (e.g., drought), with the aim of helping design forest genetic improvement programs. Additionally, my project involves transferring results to both the public sector (MITECO, Spain) and private industry.
This portfolio serves as a dynamic record of my learning, skills, and training acquired throughout the Momentum Program at CSIC. It documents my progress in computational biology, multi-omics integration, and artificial intelligence applied to forest genetic improvement. Additionally, it provides access to key deliverables, including research outputs, models, and tools developed during the program. By making these resources available through direct links, this portfolio not only tracks my professional growth but also fosters knowledge sharing and collaboration within the scientific community.
Background & Research Experience
I hold a B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid, Spain) and an M.Sc. in Evolutionary Biology from the Complutense University of Madrid, where I also earned my Ph.D. in Biology.
During my Ph.D. (2015-2020), I investigated the impact of climate change on drought-sensitive relict conifers (Abies pinsapo and Cedrus atlantica), combining population genomics and transcriptomics. I also completed international research stays at the University of Stirling (Scotland, UK) and UC Davis (USA), where I gained expertise in population genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology.
My first postdoc (2020-2022) at the Plant Computational Genomics Lab (University of Connecticut, USA) focused on forest conservation genomics and further developed my expertise in population genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology. Although I participated in several projects related to these fields, my main task was leading the development of CartograPlant, a web application that integrates, visualizes, and analyzes genotypic, phenotypic, and environmental data of georeferenced trees and plants. This FAIR-compliant platform provides accessible cyberinfrastructure for researchers and stakeholders, facilitating decision-making in plant and forest genetic improvement and conservation.
I later obtained a Juan de la Cierva Formación postdoctoral fellowship at the Forest Genomics Lab (ICIFOR-INIA-CSIC, Spain) (2022-2024), where I investigated the molecular response of Pinus pinaster to drought in grafts using different omics approaches. Shortly after joining, I expanded my research by incorporating Machine Learning and multi-omics integration, laying the foundation for an interdisciplinary and internationally innovative project, which was submitted to several national and international competitive research calls (e.g. COMFUTURO 2022, Marie Curie PF 2022, Atracción de talento César Nombela 2023, 2024).
Thanks to this initiative and the experience gained, I was selected for my current postdoctoral position at ICIFOR in the Momentum Program at CSIC, where I continue to advance in computational biology and AI-driven genomic prediction.

Research interests
My research interests lie at the intersection of genomics, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence applied to molecular ecology and forest conservation. I specialize in integrating, analyzing, and visualizing genomic, phenotypic, and environmental data to understand the response of forest species to climate change and enhance their resilience to biotic and abiotic stressors. I have worked on developing bioinformatics tools such as CartograPlant, applying landscape genomics, GWAS, meta-analysis, and machine learning approaches to address challenges in conservation biology and forest genetic improvement. Additionally, I advocate for open science and the implementation of FAIR standards in scientific data management. My experience includes international collaborations, leadership in data standardization initiatives, and editorial contributions to scientific journals, aiming to improve the accessibility and applicability of omics data in the management and conservation of forest genetic resources.
